How heavy is too heavy for drywall?

A single plastic anchor: 7 kg max. A toggle bolt: 20+ kg. A stud with a proper screw: 30+ kg. Weigh your frame first.

D-rings hang on two points and stay level. Wire is one point but self-adjusts. The course explains when to use each.

Can I avoid holes entirely?

Command strips work up to about 3 kg. Above that, you need a fastener in the wall. Accept the hole.

01Run the stud finder — or use a magnet

Turn on the stud finder, calibrate on a blank area, slide horizontally. It beeps or lights at the stud edge. Mark both edges with painter's tape — the center is where you drive. A rare-earth magnet works too: it sticks to drywall screws hidden in studs.

Studs are typically 40 cm (16 in) apart. If you find one, measure 40 cm each direction to predict the next. If your desired spot is between studs, that is fine — you will use an anchor.

Pro tip. Stud finders lie near electrical boxes and pipes. If it beeps everywhere, slow down and try a magnet instead.

02Choose the right anchor for the weight

Weigh the frame (bathroom scale works — weigh yourself, then hold the frame and subtract). Under 5 kg: a nail in drywall is often enough, or a small plastic anchor. 5–10 kg: a threaded drywall anchor (self-drilling). 10–20 kg: a toggle bolt or a snap toggle. Over 20 kg: find the stud or use two mounting points.

Plaster is harder than drywall — drill a pilot hole first to avoid cracking. Use the same anchors but always pre-drill. Tapping a nail into plaster without a pilot is how you get a spider-crack around the hole.
