Put a small piece of painter's tape at your calculated nail point. Mark the center with a pencil on the tape. Tape does not damage fresh paint and gives you a surface to write on. If you are using two D-rings, measure the distance between them on the back of the frame and transfer both marks to the wall at the same height.
Hold the frame up before you drill. Have someone step back and confirm the height and centering. This five-second check saves a second hole.
Pro tip: For two-point D-ring hanging: get both marks level first. A single millimetre off and the frame tilts visibly.
