How Your Home Heating System Actually Works

Thermostat to vents — furnace, ducts, filter, and why some rooms stay cold

40 min5 photographed stepsBeginner

Become the person who can explain the house: thermostat calls for heat, return air pulls through the filter, blower pushes across the heat exchanger, exhaust flue vents combustion gases, supply plenum feeds main and branch ducts to floor vents. Learn airflow, filter timing, thermostat placement myths, and when uneven heat is a design issue vs a dirty filter. Engineering literacy that saves service-call embarrassment — and energy bills.

What you'll learn

  • Call for heat → burner/heat exchanger → blower → supply ducts → vents
  • Return path and filter: clogged filter = weak heat and short equipment life
  • Exhaust flue is not a supply duct — combustion safety basics
  • Cold rooms: closed dampers, crushed flex duct, bad thermostat placement

First steps from The call for heat

Thermostat is just a switch with a goal
01Thermostat is just a switch with a goal

Setpoint above room temp → contacts close → furnace control board starts the sequence. Placement matters: exterior walls, kitchens, and sunny spots lie.

Find yours. Note if it's on an interior wall at ~5 ft — classic good placement.

Return air and the filter
02Return air and the filter

Cool room air is pulled into return grilles → return duct → filter → blower. Filter protects the heat exchanger and your lungs' air path.

Open the filter slot (power off if you're nervous). Read size printed on the frame. Clogged = weak airflow and higher bills.

Pro tip. Buy a 3-pack of the exact size — write install date on the frame with a marker.
