Free home & diy tip: Choose the right anchor for the weight (step 2 of 8 from "Hang a Picture Without Cracking the Wall").
Weigh the frame (bathroom scale works — weigh yourself, then hold the frame and subtract). Under 5 kg: a nail in drywall is often enough, or a small plastic anchor. 5–10 kg: a threaded drywall anchor (self-drilling). 10–20 kg: a toggle bolt or a snap toggle. Over 20 kg: find the stud or use two mounting points.
Plaster is harder than drywall — drill a pilot hole first to avoid cracking. Use the same anchors but always pre-drill. Tapping a nail into plaster without a pilot is how you get a spider-crack around the hole.
You'll need
- Frame weighed
- Stud or no-stud determined
- Anchor selected for weight
- Pilot hole drilled in plaster
