Free home & diy tip: Stud: drill pilot, drive screw, leave 5 mm proud (step 5 of 8 from "Hang a Picture Without Cracking the Wall").

If you hit a stud: drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the screw. Drive the screw until 5 mm of the shaft is still exposed — that is the hook shelf. For a wire-hung frame, angle the screw slightly upward so the wire cannot jump off.

If using an anchor: drill the hole size specified on the anchor package. Insert the anchor until flush. Drive the screw into the anchor, leaving 5 mm out. For toggle bolts: drill, push wings through, pull back to seat the toggle, tighten until snug.

You'll need

  • Pilot hole drilled
  • Screw or anchor installed
  • 5 mm exposed for the wire
  • No wall cracks visible
