Hold the rope in your left hand, standing end toward you. About 40 cm from the working end, twist a small loop in the standing part — the working end passes over the standing part to form the loop. Think of this small loop as 'the rabbit hole.' The working end is the rabbit.
The rabbit comes up through the hole (working end passes up through the loop from underneath), goes around the tree (passes behind the standing end), and back down the hole (returns through the loop from above). Pull the standing end and the loop simultaneously to tighten. The finished knot has a fixed loop that will not cinch closed.
