Attach one end of a guyline to your tent or tarp grommet with a bowline. Run the other end to a stake. Tie the taut-line hitch on the standing part between the tarp and the stake. Slide the hitch up (toward the tarp) to increase tension until the tarp is drum-tight without pulling the stake.
Overnight, temperature drops tighten some fabrics and loosen others. In the morning, slide the knot to re-tension without untying anything. This is why it replaces plastic tensioners — no parts to lose, no hardware to break, adjusts infinitely.
Pro tip: If the hitch slips on slick cord, add a third inner wrap. Three inside, one outside — more friction for modern Dyneema-core lines.
