Split dead standing wood to reach the dry interior. Shave feather sticks from the dry core. If rain is active, build a small platform of sticks to keep tinder off wet ground.

Teepee or log cabin — which is better?

Teepee lights faster because flames climb to the apex. Log cabin is more stable in wind and self-feeds as walls collapse inward. This course teaches both.

Can I use a lighter instead of a match?

For learning, use a match — it forces you to get the tinder right. Once you pass, use whatever ignition source you prefer.

What about fire starters from the store?

They work, but they mask bad structure. If your lay needs a chemical to light, the sizing or arrangement is wrong.

01Check the rules before you drive

Every jurisdiction publishes fire bans by season, sometimes by day. A campground sign reading 'fires permitted in rings only' overrides your memory of last year. Check the park website or call the ranger station the morning of your trip — conditions change after a dry week.

If a total fire ban is active, do not build a fire. No exception for 'small ones' or 'just coals'. The fine is the cheap part; the wildfire is not.

Pro tip. Screenshot the fire-ban page on your phone before you lose signal.

02Pick and prepare the fire site

Choose mineral soil or an existing fire ring at least 3 metres from tents, trees, roots, and overhanging branches. Scrape away dry leaves and duff in a 1.5-metre circle around the fire centre. If no ring exists, line the perimeter with rocks larger than a fist — they contain the coals and mark the zone.

Look up: low branches, dry moss hanging from trunks, clotheslines. A fire draws air upward and throws sparks. Clear overhead to open sky or at least 4 metres of clearance.
