Free outdoor skills tip: Test and use case (step 2 of 11 from "Tie Five Knots That Do Real Jobs").
Slip the bowline loop over a post or your hand and pull the standing end hard. The loop should remain the same size — it does not choke. This is why rescue teams use it: a bowline around a person's chest will not compress their ribs as they are pulled up.
Failure mode: if you tied it backwards (working end on the wrong side of the standing part), the knot capsizes under load and the loop closes. Test every bowline before trusting weight to it. Dress it neatly — all four strands should lie parallel without crossing inside the knot body.
You'll need
- Loop does not tighten under pull
- Working end exits inside the loop (not outside)
- Knot dressed with parallel strands
- Tested under firm hand-pull before use
