Free outdoor skills tip: Two loops over a post (step 3 of 11 from "Tie Five Knots That Do Real Jobs").

Wrap the rope around the post from front to back, crossing over the standing part. Wrap a second time in the same direction, and tuck the working end under the second wrap. Pull both ends to tighten. The two diagonal crosses should form an X on the front of the post.

Alternatively: form two loops in the air (both same direction), stack one behind the other, and slide them over the top of the post. This method is faster but only works if the post has an open top — you cannot slide loops over a tree trunk that is 10 metres tall.

Pro tip: The clove hitch can slip on smooth metal. Add a half-hitch safety on the working end for permanent setups.
