Pass the working end around an anchor (stake, tree, pole). Bring it back toward the standing part. Wrap the working end around the standing part twice, inside the loop (toward the anchor). Then make one more wrap outside the loop (away from the anchor) and tuck the working end through this outer wrap.
The key: two inner wraps, one outer wrap. Pull the hitch tight by sliding it away from the anchor along the standing part. Under load, friction locks it in place. To retension, release load, slide the knot, and reload.
