Free outdoor skills tip: Thread and pull for 3:1 advantage (step 8 of 11 from "Tie Five Knots That Do Real Jobs").

Pass the working end through or around the far anchor (a hook, bar, or ring), then back up through your mid-line loop. Pull down on the working end — you are now pulling with approximately 3:1 mechanical advantage. The load cinches tight with a third of the force.

Lock it off: hold tension with one hand and tie two half-hitches around the loaded strand just below the mid-line loop. The half-hitches lock the tension so you can let go. To release, untie the half-hitches and the whole system slackens instantly.

You'll need

  • Anchor end fixed with bowline or clove
  • Mid-line loop formed 30 cm from far anchor
  • Working end through anchor and back through loop
  • Two half-hitches lock tension
  • Load tested before driving
