Free outdoor skills tip: Light through the door (step 8 of 14 from "Build a Campfire That Lights First Try").

Kneel upwind. Strike your match and shield it with your cupped hand. Reach through the lighting door and touch the flame to the cotton-ball centre of your tinder bundle. Hold for 2–3 seconds until the tinder catches, then withdraw your hand.

Do not blow. The teepee shape creates a natural chimney — hot air rises through the apex and draws fresh air in at the base. Within 30–60 seconds, kindling should catch. If the flame falters after 20 seconds, gently blow at the base from 30 cm away — one slow breath, not a gust.
