Place your tinder bundle in the centre of the fire ring. Lean 4–5 of your thinnest kindling sticks against each other above the tinder, forming a cone. Leave a gap on the windward side — this is your lighting door. The sticks should touch at the top and splay at the base, creating a 15–20 cm cone.
Add a second ring of slightly thicker kindling around the first, still in cone shape. Then lean 3–4 of your thinnest fuel logs on the outside. The structure should stand on its own. If it collapses, start with a tripod of three sticks tied loosely at the top with a twist of grass.
Pro tip: The lighting door faces into the wind so the flame is pushed into the structure, not away from it.
