Place two fuel-sized logs parallel, 20 cm apart. Lay two more perpendicular on top, forming a square. Build 2–3 layers. Place your tinder bundle in the centre square at ground level, with thin kindling leaned over it inside the cabin. The walls shelter the tinder from wind and collapse inward as they burn, self-feeding the fire.
This lay is more stable than a teepee in gusty conditions. The downside: it takes slightly longer to catch because the fuel logs are further from the initial flame. Compensate by using extra kindling inside the cabin.
You'll need
- Two parallel base logs 20 cm apart
- Perpendicular layers stacked 2–3 high
- Tinder and kindling inside the cabin
- Lighting access on one side
