How to Remove Hard Water Stains from Shower Glass

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When shower water evaporates on glass, minerals stay behind as a white chalky film or crusty dots. Soap scum is greasy and tan; mineral scale is mineral and white. Many showers have both — vinegar cuts minerals; dish soap in the mix helps with soap film.

If a wet finger leaves a clean streak through the haze, you're fighting minerals. If the glass feels rough when you drag a fingernail even when clean, it may be etched — polishing won't fix etched tempered glass.

Vinegar (acetic acid) dissolves calcium carbonate slowly. Spraying and immediately scrubbing wastes effort. Saturate the glass until no dry patches remain, set a timer for 10–15 minutes, and let chemistry work while you wipe mirrors or tidy the vanity.

If the glass dries before the timer ends, the bathroom is over-ventilated — spray again and close the door halfway. Never mix vinegar with bleach or ammonia; fumes are dangerous and the combo does not clean better.

After dwell, scrub with a non-scratch sponge or white melamine pad in overlapping circles, top to bottom. You should feel less drag as minerals lift. Do not use steel wool, green abrasive pads, or razor blades unless your door manufacturer explicitly allows it — micro-scratches collect stains faster.

For stubborn crust dots, apply baking soda paste (three parts soda, one part vinegar) to spots only. Wait five minutes, scrub with a toothbrush, rinse. Paste on the whole door is unnecessary and mildly abrasive over large areas.

Rinse all vinegar and paste from top to bottom with the handheld shower or a cup of warm water. If haze remains while wet, minerals are not gone — repeat dwell on that panel before squeegeeing.

Squeegee in vertical overlapping strokes, wiping the blade with a microfiber cloth after each pass. Finish with a dry microfiber buff. Replace squeegees when the rubber edge chips — nicks leave permanent streak lines.

Spray vinegar into the bottom door track, wait three minutes, scrub with a toothbrush, and flush toward the drain. Sticky sliding doors are often crust in the track, not bad rollers.

Prevention: squeegee each panel after your last rinse, run the fan 20 minutes, and light vinegar spray on wet glass once a week. Maintenance beats another two-hour deep scrub.
