Can I use bleach instead of vinegar?

Yes, but never mix bleach with vinegar or ammonia. Use one or the other per session. Vinegar is safer on stone counters.

What if my oven is self-cleaning?

This course covers the exterior and glass door. If the inside needs work, run the self-clean cycle first, then follow the exterior steps here.

Do I really need multiple microfiber cloths?

Yes. A cloth that wiped the hood carries grease to the counter. Swap cloths between zones or you're moving dirt around.

Granite counters — is vinegar safe?

No. Vinegar etches natural stone. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner on granite and marble. The course notes where to skip vinegar.

01Lay out every product and tool

Pull every item from the supply list onto the counter: dish soap, baking soda, vinegar spray, all-purpose cleaner, gloves, microfiber cloths, scrub brush, toothbrush, bucket, and mop. Fill the spray bottle now — 50/50 white vinegar and water. Label it so nobody mistakes it for window cleaner next week.

Put on rubber gloves. If the exhaust fan above the stove has a removable mesh filter, pop it out now and drop it in the sink. Fill the sink with the hottest water your tap makes, add 2 tablespoons of dish soap, and dump in a quarter-cup of baking soda. Let the filter soak while you work downward.

02Clear the counters completely

Move every appliance, knife block, fruit bowl, and spice rack off the counters and onto the dining table or a towel on the floor. You cannot deep-clean around a toaster. Every item that stays is a corner you will skip, and corners are where grease films build up.

While the surfaces are bare, toss any expired spices, sticky bottles, or mystery jars. A deep clean is also a purge. If something hasn't been touched in six months, it doesn't earn counter space.

Pro tip. Take a phone photo of the counter layout before you move things. It makes putting everything back faster and you might decide you liked the cleared look better.
