Why baking soda beats self-clean for most home ovens
Self-clean cycles crank the oven above 900°F to burn grease to ash — effective but harsh on door seals, smoky, and unpleasant in small kitchens. Commercial oven sprays work fast but use caustic chemicals you breathe while scrubbing.
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a mild alkali that softens carbonized grease when it stays wet against the surface for hours. It is safe on enamel interiors and glass when rinsed. The tradeoff is time: you coat at night and wipe in the morning — not a 15-minute miracle, but a reliable reset without fumes.

Mix paste that stays on walls
Add water to baking soda slowly until the texture is like thick toothpaste. Spreadable on a vertical surface but not runny. A box of soda is normal for a neglected oven — do not skimp.
Coat every interior surface except bare heating elements and gas burner ports. On gas ovens, mask ports with foil while pasting nearby. Close the door and walk away 8–12 hours. Paste should dry and crack where grease was heaviest — that means it worked.

Reinstall dry racks. Run empty at 200°F / 95°C for 20 minutes with the hood fan on to dry hidden moisture and clear vinegar smell. Preheat test: no smoke odor at 350°F means you pass.

When not to use this method
Do not paste continuous-clean textured liners — manufacturer coatings are porous and paste can clog them. Do not coat heating elements. If your oven manual forbids abrasives on interior enamel, follow the manual instead.
Etched or peeling enamel needs professional assessment — no cleaner fixes damaged coating. For light maintenance between deep cleans, wipe spills when the oven is still warm (not hot) with a damp cloth.
