Grow Microgreens on the Counter

A shallow tray, seeds, a spray bottle, and harvest in 7–14 days on a kitchen windowsill

45 min7 photographed stepsBeginner

You will grow microgreens — radish, sunflower, or pea shoots — in a shallow tray on your kitchen counter or windowsill. No garden, no outdoor space, no grow light required. You will sow densely on potting mix or a hemp mat, mist daily, and harvest with scissors when the first true leaves appear (day 7–14). Total cost under five dollars per tray.

What you'll learn

  • Microgreens are not sprouts — they grow in medium, develop leaves, and are cut above the root
  • Dense sowing is correct here — shoulder to shoulder is the goal
  • The blackout phase forces stems to stretch toward (eventual) light
  • Harvest at first true leaves for best flavor and texture

  • Blackout and germinationDarkness makes them stretch. Then light makes them green.

First steps from Set up the tray

Level surface, evenly moist. That is the seedbed.
01Fill the tray with 1–2 cm of moist potting mix

Dampen the mix first — grab a handful and squeeze. A few drops should come out, not a stream. Spread it evenly in the tray and press flat with your palm or a piece of cardboard. No hills, no valleys. Seeds that sit on a peak dry out; seeds in a crater drown.

If using a hemp mat: soak the mat in water for 30 seconds, let it drip, lay it flat in the tray. The mat holds moisture evenly and makes cleanup easier but produces slightly less yield than soil.

Sow densely — seeds almost touching
02Sow densely — seeds almost touching

Scatter seeds across the entire surface so they are nearly shoulder to shoulder. For radish: about 1–2 tablespoons per 10×20 tray. For sunflower or pea: soak seeds 8–12 hours first (they are large and need hydration to crack), then spread one layer deep.

Press seeds gently into the surface with your palm. Do not bury them — a light press for soil contact is enough. Mist the surface thoroughly with the spray bottle.

Pro tip. If you can see a lot of bare soil between seeds, add more. Microgreens are not garden spacing.
