Cold Email That Gets Replies

Twenty real people, a five-sentence email, one follow-up, a reply log

1h 45m13 photographed stepsBeginner

You will run one 20-email freelance outreach campaign: research 20 real humans, write a 5-sentence email with one proof line and one ask, send in three batches, follow up once on day 4, and log every reply. No 'I hope this email finds you well.' This is outreach mechanics — it pairs with freelance writing, but here the product is the send and the spreadsheet, not another sample.

What you'll learn

  • How to pick 20 real people instead of a scraped list of info@ addresses
  • A 5-sentence email: context, proof, ask — no throat-clearing
  • Subject lines that name the work, not clickbait
  • Batch sends, one follow-up at day 4, and a log that tells you what to do next

Inside this course

  • Twenty real people, not a list of inboxesIf you cannot say why this person, do not send. Research is the work. The email is short on purpose.
  • Five sentences, one proof, one askIf it needs a second scroll on a phone, it is too long. Subject line is a label, not a trick.
  • Three batches, not one blastSend 7, wait, send 7, send 6. You want a chance to fix a typo in the script before all 20 are out.
  • Day 4 follow-up, onceOne bump. Same thread. New information, not 'circling back.' Then you stop.
  • What a yes actually requiresThe email was the easy part. Do not improvise scope in Slack.

First steps from Twenty real people, not a list of inboxes

See how every step looks — photo, checklist, and pro tips included.

One sentence offer. One proof asset. Not a menu of seven services.
01One offer you can deliver this month

Write one sentence: I help [role] at [type of company] by [deliverable] so they can [result]. Example: I write the 3-email onboarding sequence for B2B SaaS trial users so more of them activate in week one. The deliverable must be something you can finish in a week if they say yes — a sample page, a 15-minute teardown of their pricing page, or a paid first draft at a number you already decided.

Do not offer 'content strategy' or 'I'd love to hop on a call to explore synergies.' Those are not offers. Pick either (A) a specific sample you will attach or link, or (B) a 15-minute written audit of one URL they own. You will use that in sentence four. If you have no sample yet, write one 400-word piece this afternoon and label it Sample — that is enough for this campaign.

Spreadsheet columns before you browse
02Spreadsheet columns before you browse

Make 20 empty rows. Columns: Name, Role, Company, Company URL, Their page I actually read, Specific observation (8–15 words), Email, Send date, Batch (1/2/3), Follow-up date, Reply (yes/no/out-of-office), Next action. Do not add a 'personality' column. Do not color-code yet.

You will fill observation before email address. If the observation is 'great company' you have not researched them. The observation should be falsifiable: 'pricing page has no annual toggle' or 'blog last posted 11 months ago' or 'careers page hiring a content manager — they are buying this work internally already, skip.'
