Behind the dropped glovebox is a rectangular door, often one clip or two tabs. Open it. The cabin filter is a 2–3 cm thick accordion. Before you pull it, look for an airflow arrow printed on the frame (DOWN or an arrow toward the floor is common). Photograph it. Slide the old filter straight out. If it is caked grey or has leaves in it, that is why the HVAC smelled like a gym bag.
Do not smash the old filter into a ball while it is still in the slot — debris falls into the blower. If leaves are sitting in the void, pull them out with your fingers or a vacuum crevice tool. Gloves are reasonable; this dust is cabin air you have been breathing.
