Free cleaning & laundry tip: Prep the shirt on the board (step 2 of 9 from "Iron a Dress Shirt in 4 Minutes").
Unbutton every button including the cuffs and collar stays. Remove collar stays and set them aside — ironing over a stay can leave a ridge. Lay the shirt flat on the board with the inside facing up for the first pass (collar). The narrow end of the board is your friend for sleeves and shoulders.
Mist the shirt lightly with the spray bottle if it's bone-dry cotton. A barely-damp shirt irons faster and smoother than a completely dry one. For polyester, skip the mist — work dry to avoid water spots.
You'll need
- All buttons undone
- Collar stays removed
- Iron at correct temp
- Shirt lightly misted (cotton only)
