Free food & cooking tip: Thin crumb coat, then the real coat (step 6 of 8 from "Cake Decorating Essentials").

Spread a thin layer to trap crumbs. Scrape almost to the cake. Chill 15 minutes until matte. Then a generous final coat. Hold a bench scraper vertical, spin the turntable, one pass at a time. Fill gaps, scrape again.

Warm water on the scraper, wiped dry, gives cleaner sides. Chill 20 minutes before piping so decorations don't drag.
