Beat 250 g room-temp butter 3 minutes until it looks paler. Add 400 g sifted icing sugar in two additions on low so you don't powder the kitchen, then 2 Tbsp milk, 1 tsp vanilla, pinch of salt. Beat 3 more minutes.

Too stiff: milk 1 teaspoon at a time. Too loose: more sugar or 10 minutes in the fridge. For piping it should hold a peak and still spread.
