01Parse the rules before Pinterest

Read the email twice. Budget cap is maximum, not a target — $20 all-in means $20 after tax and shipping, not $20 plus surprise fees. Note whether names are secret, whether gifts are shipped or opened together, and if there is a 'no alcohol' or 'no food' line.

Remote swaps punish bulky junk. In-person swaps punish loud or embarrassing items unless the culture is explicitly chaotic. When in doubt, choose small, neutral, and consumable. You are not trying to win comedy night; you are trying to avoid being the person whose gift sits in the break room for three years.

02One-week observation sprint

You have seven days and maybe five minutes total. Walk past their desk once: mug style (coffee drinker?), snack wrappers, headphones, plants, sticky notes. One Slack scroll: do they post about baking, running, cats, games?

Write three nouns max — 'coffee, dog, spreadsheets' — not a personality dossier. If you know nothing, default lane is quality consumable or desk utility. Never guess a hobby from a name alone.
