Free pets tip: White or translucent nails: see the pink, cut in front of it (step 3 of 14 from "Nail Trim Without a Wrestling Match").

On a pale nail, look from the side in daylight or with the torch. The quick is the pink cone inside. Your cut is 2 mm in front of that pink, perpendicular to the nail, not a tiny nibble that leaves a spike. If you see a grey-pink oval on the cut face, you are close — stop that nail. The next session can take another millimetre after the quick recedes.

Do not cut flush with the toe. Do not cut downward toward the pad. If the dog has dewclaws that curl into a circle, those are not 'just like the others' — see the dewclaw step before you clip them. One white nail, look at the face, then a treat. That is the whole drill for a dog who has never been trimmed at home.
