Free cleaning & laundry tip: Fill the drum correctly (step 8 of 10 from "Laundry That Doesn't Shrink or Stink").
A washing machine needs room to agitate. Fill the drum about three-quarters full for a regular load — clothes should tumble freely when the drum spins. Stuffing the drum tight means clothes don't move, water can't circulate, and detergent can't reach every surface. The result: still-dirty, wrinkled clothes.
For a front-loader, leave a hand's width of space at the top. For a top-loader, don't pack below the agitator fins. Sheets and towels should go in loosely — balling a fitted sheet means the center never gets clean. Shake it out and drape it around the drum.
