Blood, grease, and wine
Blood, grease, and wine — step 6 of 10 in Laundry That Doesn't Shrink or Stink. Blood: immediately rinse with cold water — never hot, which cooks the protein and sets the stain.

Free cleaning & laundry tip: Blood, grease, and wine (step 6 of 10 from "Laundry That Doesn't Shrink or Stink").
Blood: immediately rinse with cold water — never hot, which cooks the protein and sets the stain. Apply hydrogen peroxide (3%) directly, let it fizz for 5 minutes, then rinse. For dried blood, soak in cold water with a tablespoon of salt for 30 minutes before treating with peroxide.
Grease (oil, butter, salad dressing): rub a drop of blue Dawn dish soap directly into the stain with your fingers. Let it sit 10 minutes. The surfactants in dish soap break cooking grease better than laundry detergent. Wash on the warmest temperature the fabric label allows. Red wine: blot (don't rub), cover with table salt to absorb, then rinse with cold water. A paste of baking soda and water on the remaining stain, left 30 minutes, lifts most of it before washing.
You'll need
- Blood → cold water + peroxide
- Grease → dish soap, 10 min dwell
- Red wine → salt, then baking soda paste
- Never hot water on protein stains
