Free cleaning & laundry tip: Detergent dosing by load size (step 5 of 10 from "Laundry That Doesn't Shrink or Stink").
More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes. Excess soap doesn't rinse out — it leaves a film that traps odor-causing bacteria. Gym clothes that 'still smell after washing' are almost always over-dosed. Use the measuring lines on the cap: level 1 for a small or lightly soiled load, level 2 for a full regular load, level 3 only for heavily soiled work clothes.
HE (high-efficiency) machines use less water, so they need HE detergent and roughly half the amount of a traditional machine. If you see suds through the door glass on a front-loader, you used too much. Run an extra rinse cycle and use less next time.
