01High, central, not in a cupboard

Radios like air and height. A closet, a TV cabinet, and the floor behind the TV are how you invent dead zones. If the fiber jack is in a corner, that is a constraint — plan mesh from there, do not pretend the laws changed.

2.4 GHz goes further and hates microwaves. 5 GHz is faster and dies through two walls. Modern routers band-steer. Let them. One name for both bands unless you have a weird IoT brick that only speaks 2.4 — then a second SSID just for that brick.

02Walk the house with a laptop video

Start a 1080p stream. Walk to the bedroom, the yard, the bathroom. Note where it buffers. That map is the product requirement. A phone Wi-Fi number in dBm is extra: roughly -50 is great, -70 is meh, -80 is why Zoom looks like 2004.

Do this before you buy mesh. Sometimes the fix is moving the gateway two metres and standing it up.
